Understanding Die-Cutting: How Custom Shapes Are Made

The mechanics of die-cutting and what makes a shape economical to produce.

Die-cutting is how bags and boxes get their shape. A die is a set of sharp steel blades mounted on a wooden or metal base, used to cut and crease paper into the flat outline that folds into the finished product.

How a die is made

Your dieline (the 2D outline showing cut lines and fold lines) is sent to a die-maker who mounts steel blades along the cut lines and creasing rules along the fold lines. Cost: AED 800–5,000 depending on complexity.

What makes a shape cheap or expensive

Simple rectangular shapes are cheapest. Curves require thin flexible steel that costs more. Interior cutouts (windows, handle holes) add complexity. Multi-piece dies (base + lid together) cost more but produce paired parts efficiently.

Die longevity

A well-made die produces 100,000+ impressions before needing sharpening or replacement. Stored properly between runs, it lasts years.

Prototyping without a die

For samples and prototypes, we hand-cut structures on a plotter — slower per-unit but zero tooling cost. Once you're ready for bulk, we tool the die.
