Packaging artwork preparation is the technical process of configuring graphic files so they conform precisely to a physical packaging template, known as a die-line. Unlike standard graphic design, which focuses on visual aesthetics, packaging prepress focuses on mechanical execution—ensuring every element accounts for sheet trim, folding creases, gusset collapses, top turn-overs, and bottom reinforcement boards.
When ordering printed paper bags or luxury shopping bags, artwork must be built directly onto an engineered vector die-line provided by the factory. This template contains distinct line types: cutting lines, creasing/folding lines, and perforation lines. Your artwork must extend beyond the cut line into the bleed area, while crucial text and logos must remain strictly within the designated safe zones.
Failing to align graphic elements to the underlying structural geometry leads to unsightly white edges along fold lines or truncated brand names in the side gussets. A press-ready file eliminates these risks before metal plates are imaged in prepress.
Vector files vs raster images in paper bag production
One of the most common file defects encountered in prepress is the use of low-resolution or rasterised artwork for structural brand elements. Logotypes, icons, typography, and technical symbols must always be provided as pure vector graphics created in programs like Adobe Illustrator.
Why vector artwork is non-negotiable
Vector graphics rely on mathematical paths rather than a grid of pixels. This allows the artwork to be scaled infinitely without losing sharpness. On offset presses, vector outlines produce crisp, razor-sharp edges on typography and logos—even when printing small 6pt legal text or intricate brand marks.

- Resolution: All raster images must have an effective resolution of at least 300 DPI (dots per inch) at 100% placement scale.
- Embedded Assets: Linked images must be embedded into the final master file, or sent alongside the project file in a dedicated links folder.
- Font Conversion: All typography must be converted to outlines (curves) to prevent font-substitution errors on our prepress RIPS (Raster Image Processors).
Understanding bleeds, safe zones, and crease lines
Paper bag conversion involves mechanical movement. High-speed folding and gluing machinery operates within a physical tolerance of approximately ±1mm to ±1.5mm. Bleeds and safe zones exist to absorb these minor mechanical variances without compromising the finished appearance.

Bleed guidelines
Bleed is the artwork that extends beyond the physical trim line. For standard sheet-fed offset manufacturing, we require a minimum 3mm bleed around all outer perimeters. For full-coverage solid background colours or heavy pattern floods, extending the bleed to 5mm is recommended.
Safe zone rules
Keep all text, essential graphics, and brand marks at least 5mm away from all fold lines and die-cuts. For heavy boards used in luxury packaging (200 GSM to 250 GSM coated art paper), increase this safe zone to 8mm around the main panel edges, turn-tops, and bottom glue flaps.
Gussets and turn-tops
The side gussets (the accordion folds on the sides of the bag) collapse inward when the bag is stored flat. Never place a continuous horizontal design or body text straight across the front panel into the side gusset without accounting for the vertical crease fold. Similarly, remember that the top edge of a luxury bag folds inward by 30mm to 40mm to form the turn-top reinforcement; any artwork placed at the top edge must account for this fold-over.
Colour management: CMYK vs Pantone spot colours
Digital displays render imagery using the RGB (Red, Green, Blue) colour model. Commercial offset printing presses, however, construct images using CMYK process inks (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) or direct Pantone Matching System (PMS) spot inks. Submitting files in RGB mode guarantees severe colour shifts when converted at the prepress stage.
When to use CMYK
CMYK process printing is ideal for full-colour photography, complex multi-tonal illustrations, and detailed imagery. However, reproducing continuous, ultra-flat brand background colors using CMYK can occasionally yield subtle tonal variation across large production runs.
When to specify Pantone spot colours
If your brand identity relies on an exact corporate shade—such as a specific blue, green, or red—you must specify a solid Pantone spot colour in your file. Spot inks are pre-mixed chemically before being loaded onto the press, ensuring 100% colour consistency across every batch.
Substrates impact on colour
The physical substrate dramatically influences ink appearance:
- Coated Art Paper: Inks sit on top of the smooth coating, resulting in vibrant, punchy colors (use Pantone Solid Coated references).
- Uncoated Kraft Paper: Inks absorb deeply into the raw fibers of kraft paper bags, muting brightness and darkening tones (use Pantone Solid Uncoated references).
- Brown Kraft Paper: Standard CMYK inks are translucent. Printing CMYK over raw brown kraft will result in the brownish background altering the final hue. To achieve crisp colours on brown kraft, we must first print an under-white opaque ink layer or use dedicated high-opacity spot inks.

Step-by-step layer configuration
- Layer 1: Artwork: Place all printable graphics, background fills, photos, and typography here.
