MOQ Explained: How to Get Great Packaging as a Startup

Minimum-order-quantity strategies for brands that don't yet order at scale.

MOQ is the biggest barrier for early-stage brands who want premium packaging. Here's how to work around it without compromising quality.

Understand what drives MOQ

MOQ isn't arbitrary. It reflects the setup cost of press plates, dies, foil blocks and finishing runs. Below the MOQ, per-unit cost gets so high that the manufacturer loses efficiency.

Choose digital printing

Digital printing has no plates and minimal setup. This drops effective MOQ from 1,000 to 250–500 units on many products — the biggest single strategy for startups.

Standardize your design

Simple, low-color designs on standard sizes reduce setup cost. Save the custom shape and full-color photographic imagery for when you scale.

Accept slightly higher per-unit cost

At 300 units your per-bag cost might be AED 12; at 3,000 it might drop to AED 5. If that AED 12 fits your unit economics, the small run is fine — get to market and iterate.

Batch across products

Combine your bag order with a box order in the same production window. Setup costs amortize across the combined value.

Skip the foil for now

Foil, emboss and multiple finishing effects each add setup cost. A clean 1-color print on kraft with a foil-free brand mark can look excellent and keeps MOQ low.

Grow with your supplier

Pick a manufacturer who'll take your 300-unit order and grow with you to 30,000. That relationship pays dividends in production priority and pricing when you scale.
