Color Management: Why Your Brand Colors Drift and How to Fix It

The technical process behind consistent brand color across print runs.

Your customer expects your bag today to look identical to your bag last year. If it doesn't, you have a color management problem — not a print problem.

Pantone vs CMYK

CMYK reproduces color by mixing four inks and simulating a target. Pantone reproduces color by pre-mixing a specific ink recipe to hit the target exactly. For brand colors, use Pantone spot inks.

Pantone Coated vs Uncoated

The same Pantone number looks different on coated vs uncoated paper. Always specify: 'Pantone 185 C' (coated) or 'Pantone 185 U' (uncoated), and match to the actual stock you're printing on.

The printed proof

A printed proof on the actual production stock is the only reliable pre-production reference. Screen and digital previews approximate.

Ink recipe archiving

Your supplier should archive the exact ink recipe used on your first run so reprints match. Ask them.

Environmental variables

Paper batch variation, humidity, ink batch and press wear all introduce small color variation. Good supplier tolerance is ±3 Delta-E; luxury tolerance is ±2 Delta-E.

When color drift is unacceptable

For flagship luxury brands, request that reprints be run against the archived first-run reference sample, not just against the digital file. This closes the loop on drift.
