Paper Bag Handles: Twisted Paper, Rope, Ribbon and More
The five handle types and how each affects cost, load-bearing and brand signal.
Handles are the most consequential detail on a paper bag — they carry the load, define the brand feel, and cost meaningfully. Here's the landscape.
Twisted paper
The default handle for kraft and F&B bags. Recyclable, biodegradable, cost-effective. Load-bearing to 5–7 kg with reinforcement.
Flat paper
Simpler than twisted, cheaper still. Common on lightweight retail and F&B. Less load capacity.
Cotton rope / cord
Premium feel. Available in multiple colors and thicknesses. Standard for premium retail. Adds AED 0.50–1.50 per bag.
Satin / grosgrain ribbon
The luxury tier. Custom-color ribbon threaded through eyelets and hand-knotted inside. Adds AED 1.5–4 per bag. Reserved for luxury retail.
Die-cut / punched handles
No handle — a die-cut opening in the bag. Ultra-minimalist. Common on eco-forward and F&B.
Reinforcement matters
Any handle on a load-bearing bag needs a cardboard reinforcement strip glued at the top. Without it, handles tear at the paper.
Cost vs impression
Handle choice is one of the highest-ROI cost decisions on a bag. Upgrading from twisted paper to satin ribbon transforms perceived value at a fraction of overall bag cost.
