Sustainable packaging can be substantive or performative. Here's how to make choices that actually reduce impact — and how the UAE regulatory picture makes that easier.
Start with material choice
Paper beats plastic for most applications. Within paper, recycled kraft beats virgin coated, and thinner gsm beats thicker where structural performance allows.
FSC certification is a must-ask
The Forest Stewardship Council certification means the fibers come from responsibly managed forests. Ask your manufacturer for FSC-certified stock and the right to print the FSC logo on the finished item.
Inks matter more than you think
Water-based inks avoid volatile organic compounds; soy-based inks use renewable oil rather than petroleum. On kraft, water-based prints look muted and natural — a good fit for the aesthetic.
Skip plastic lamination if you can
BOPP lamination gives a premium finish but makes the whole item non-compostable and slows recycling. Water-based varnish is the plastic-free alternative and looks nearly identical on matte finishes.
Handle materials matter
Cotton rope, twisted paper and paper tape handles are recyclable / compostable. Plastic-blend woven handles are not. This is the fastest, easiest sustainability win on a paper bag.
The UAE regulatory picture
Several emirates have implemented single-use plastic restrictions, and paper packaging is now the default retail carry solution. Getting ahead of compliance protects your brand and your operating cost.
What doesn't count
Printing a leaf icon and 'eco' on a plastic-laminated coated bag is greenwash. Make the material choices real and let the design be quiet.
